MY DAD
I dedicate this book of rhymes to the memory of my dad,
Just as fine a father as a daughter ever had.
He had a gift of using words that he passed on to me,
Many of my stories are based on his philosophy.
THE MESSAGE OF THE ECHOES
As mother bathed the black eye of her little lad,
He explained he was not to blame for the fight he had.
Mother said “Son, you may think you were right,
But remember, it takes two to make a fight.”
LOVELY LADY IN THE HARBOR
Lovely Lady in the harbor of our dear old USA
You stand for a land that God has blessed in every way.
Proudly you hold high a torch of Liberty
Symbol of hope and love to lands across the sea.
THE ROAD TO HAPPINESS
One of our evening papers ran a little wishing well,
If you followed the directions closely your fortune it would tell.
Oh, they explained, you were not to take it seriously,
But each night I would figure out what my fate should be.
GIVING CREDIT WHERE IT IS DUE
I went to a football game one damp and chilly night,
There were a lot of things about the game I didn’t seem to like.
A fellow made a touchdown and the cheers that filled the air,
Well, I know you could have heard them if you lived three miles from there.
A SMORGASBORD
While on vacation visiting some friends of mine,
They decided one evening at a Smorgasbord we’d dine.
I had never been to one, but was told they had food galore
And you could eat and eat and eat, until you could eat no more.
WHAT MAN CAN BUY WITH GOLD
Had the privilege of visiting a perfectly magnificent home,
From every nook and corner the signs of wealth were shown.
The strains of a marvelous organ were floating through the halls,
The work of famous artists looked down from the walls.
GOD’S GREATEST GIFT
God sent an angel from heaven, down to this world of sin,
To find that which he thought most beautiful, and bring it back to him.
The Angel traveled here and there and everywhere, finally he chose,
That which he thought most beautiful, a very lovely rose.
MOTHERHOOD
Down in the valley of shadow we go,
How far in those depths, we never know,
Months of waiting, hours of pain,
Then it’s over, we’re smiling again.
TO BE THE MOTHER MY CHILDREN THINK I AM
Have you ever had days, when the whole day long
Everything you’ve done has seemed to go wrong ?
The clocks were slow, the whole family was late-
The flour bin was empty and you wanted to bake.
A TRIBUTE TO MOTHERS
Dear Mother, as I rock my own baby in my arms
And thrill with his smiles and sweet baby charms,
I dream of those days in years long ago
When I was the baby you rocked to and fro.
GRANDMA
Most young girls feel as they approach womanhood the sweetest day of their life
Will be when they hear the minister say “I pronounce you man and wife.”
But you’ll find there is a sweeter day, one that will fill your soul with joy,
That’s when you hear the doctor say you’re the mother of a baby girl or boy.
THE ANGEL’S MISTAKE
Are you boss of all the angels, God, I’d really like to know,
‘Cause they made a big mistake at my house just a day ago.
I’ve been praying every night, about a year or more,
That you’d send me a sister like the little girl next door.
LIFE’S FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH
Never measure youth by the years you’ve lived
For youth is a state of mind
Brought about by the joys and trials you’ve lived
And the marks that are left behind.
FLYING FEET AT SEVENTY-TWO
I have the dearest little Mother, that ever you did see,
On her next birthday, she’ll be just seventy-three,
But instead of growing older, she grows younger everyday,
And more lovely to look at, as each year rolls away.
GOD’S BOUQUET
There is a new flower blooming in heaven, a new flower In God’s bouquet,
There is a vacant space in our garden, but the heavens are brighter today
When we want a bouquet to brighten these homes of ours,
We go into our gardens and choose the loveliest flowers.
MEMORIES OF THE 1937 FLOOD
(Humorous, Tragic and Beautiful)
Our beautiful Ohio somehow betrayed our trust,
Turned from a thing of beauty to a hideous Octopus,
Stretched its grimy arms over towns, both large and small,
And seemed it would not be content until it reached us all.
TRIALS OF A WAR BRIDE
Well, she’s married now, this youngest girl of mine,
But until we got her married we really had a time.
When she said she wanted to be married, I said it couldn’t be done,
She’d never get my consent until she was twenty-one.
ONE FOR THE BOOK
I am one of those mothers who never lays down her head,
Until my entire family is tucked safely in bed.
I don’t do this to be noble, I’m not sure I think it’s right,
It is just until they are all in bed I can’t sleep at night.
NEVER TRY TO CURE YOUR ILLS BY TAKING SOMEONE ELSE’S PILLS
You’ve heard the saying no doubt that what cures one will kill another,
Well, I found out that pills given to the daughter will not cure the mother.
I found it out the hard way by experience, sad but true,
It’s surprising that I’m here after all that I went through.
GARDENS INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE HOME
This story may not help you much, in making your gardens grow,
There is much about growing a garden the writer does not know.
I hope the little story in rhyme that I will bring you here
Will help you to find more beauty in the flowers you grow this year.
THE LESSON LEARNED FROM THE INVALID’S SMILE
Have you ever been so out of sorts with the world
That you just didn’t know what to do?
And if you had to, you couldn’t tell the reason why
You were feeling so blue?
KEEP THE CANDLES GLOWING
Heard this little story on my radio the other day,
Found a world of meaning in what it had to say.
It told of a woman that had lost an only child,
The experience made her bitter — from then on she never smiled.
THE SPIRIT OF EASTER TIME
I was asked to write a rhyme about Easter-time that would say a word or two
As to just what the Easter Season means to folks like me and you.
I’ve given it a lot of thought, wondering just what I should say,
Because Easter seems to mean so many things to Christians of today.
MY EASTER PARADE
World War Two had been declared, our hearts were filled with fear.
Our sons and husbands were being called, and Easter-time was near.
The Easter Parade I saw that year, I never shall forget,
My emotions were mingled with pride, joy, heartache and regret.
WITH GOD ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WALL
When God calls a loved one and life seems so dreary and gray,
Try to think of this little story, It might help drive your sorrow away.
There was once a little boy who was very fond of flowers,
In his own little garden he spent many happy hours.
A MOTHER’S SOLILOQUY
As I look back upon the years
That I’ve already spent
And ask myself this question
Am I satisfied? Content?
A MESSAGE FROM HEAVEN
There is a beautiful land that knows no fear, no sorrow or no pain
But we must leave those near and dear, this heavenly home to gain
We like to feel that loved ones gone, to that beautiful land above
Each day are looking down upon, the ones on earth they love.
HEARTACHES OF SCHOOLDAYS
The tears were streaming down his face, his little heart was broke,
He knew his pals would laugh at him, but to him ’twas not a joke.
He ran behind the garage and climbed up in a tree,
Hid there from the playmates he did not want to see.
VALENTINES
To honor old St. Valentine many years ago,
They set aside a “sweetheart’s day” as most all of you know.
It was a day for bashful lovers to somehow do their part,
To express with a little token, the love that’s in their heart.
THE BELLY MASONS AND EAT’N STARS
While we were away visiting some of our relations,
I heard my husband say to his Uncle Jack, “So you’re a Belly Mason” ?
Really, I was awfully shocked; I thought it was a shame
That just because the man was fat, he’d call him such a name.
COUGH DROPS
When I heard this story I thought It was funny as could be,
And I thought it was new and true when it was told to me,
But the first time I told it someone said, you know
Oh! I heard that story fifteen years ago.
BEAUTIFUL OHIO
BEAUTIFUL OHIO, God gave you what it takes, To play your
part right in the heart of the UNITED STATES. HE
blessed your land, with gifts so grand, only HE can give,
Thus HE made OHIO a glorious place to live
WHY WE HAVE CHRISTMAS ON THE 25TH OF DECEMBER
Johnny had a birthday not very long ago
And his mother baked a birthday cake with four candles all aglow.
His friends sang “Happy Birthday” and brought him presents too,
And Johnny loved his birthday as most all children do.
BOX TOP SANTA CLAUS
I picked up my paper one night,
Just before I went to bed,
I got a great big laugh
Out of something that I read.
FINDING THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT
Christmas Day was drawing near and I was feeling blue
Because Old Man Depression was hanging around and there was so little I could do.
I couldn’t buy toys with money that I had to spend for shoes
And to tell my children Santa Claus forgot them seemed so hard to do.
CHRISTMAS SPIRIT YOU’RE A BIRD
Christmas Spirit you’re a bird,
Why you change folks without a word,
My kid brother’s been so good
Does everything Mom says he should.
THAT HOLY NIGHT
Once more that blessed season of Christmas draws near,
The most wonderful season of all the year,
When the Christmas Carols and Candlelight,
Remind us of that Holy Night
GOD AND MAN MUST WORK TOGETHER
A little old man bought a little old house, in a little old town one day
Both looked like they were ready for the saints, but the old man didn’t feel that way.
No one had lived in this little old house for many many years
Folks who passed that way, would often say, ’twas a symbol of natures tears.
JUVENILE DELINQUENCY
Read this little story in a magazine one day… Turned it into rhyme
for I liked what it had to say…It holds a splendid message at least
so it seems to me …That God and man must work together in raising a family.
WE FAT GALS
I get a big laugh out of what we fat gals like to do,
We like to believe a lot of things we know just aren’t true.
We like to believe the scale that weighs the least when we know it isn’t right,
We like to buy a dress a smaller size when we know it is too tight.
WHY I FELL OFF MY DIET
Not very long ago I went on a diet,
Everybody else was doing it, so I thought I would try it.
Oh, yes, I lost a pound or two — but you would never know it,
For I have to lose about fifty pounds before I ever show it.
HUMAN GUINEA PIGS
Most folks are just Guinea Pigs for some Doctors of today,
They use these so called Wonder Drugs, on all who pass their way.
If you are one who just can’t take it, it simply is too bad,
You are in for a sick spell, you never should have had.
THOSE TONSILS
They say the tonsils are the system’s garbage can
But what I’d like to know
Is when they take your tonsils out,
Where does the garbage go?
THAT APPENDIX
I’ve heard it said but I’m not sure who said it
That if you have an appendix the doctors will get it,
So please don’t tell your doctor that I still have mine
Or he will want to come up and see me sometime.
KEEP YOUR LITTLE ONES AT HOME
Judy was a lovely child a little girl of three,
And she was just as pretty as a little girl could be.
Great big blue eyes, complexion like a rose,
Folks just fall in love with her no matter where she goes.
FATHER’S DAY
Not long ago, as you all know,
We honored Mother’s Day,
Dad joined the rest, and did his best
To show her in some way.
THESE GRANDPAS
Have you ever watched a brand new daddy,
It’s really lots of fun.
He struts in a way that seems to say,
“Just look what I have done”.
GRANDMAS OF TODAY
I was asked to be humorous in my talk about mothers tonight
But somehow I’ve never found Motherhood on the funny side of life.
To me it’s always been a very serious problem – too serious I suppose
With all the thrills, joys and heartaches every mother knows.
OLD AGE RETIREMENT
Everybody works but Grandpa, he sits around all day
He’s got old age retirement – at least that’s what they say.
Now Grandma’s no spring chicken – you all know that is true –
But if she gets retirement, what will my Grandpa do?
RAINY DAYS
Before we had depression I made a lot of dough
And as easy as I made it, that’s how I let it go.
I’d drop the children off at mother’s and the wife and I would go
Either to a night club or take in a picture show.
THANKSGIVING
Now, someone wrote these beautiful lines
That no doubt you all have heard
But I think there’s a world of meaning
In these few little words.
THE FIRST LADY OF THE MINISTRY
I heard three ministers’ wives tell of their experiences just the other day,
They rather opened my eyes with what they had to say,
Made me realize just how big you have to be
To be successful as the first lady of the ministry.
WON’T YOU MAKE A SOLDIER’S DREAM COME TRUE
Try to picture an army camp just after the noonday meal is thru
And someone shouts “Here comes the mail” – why folks I’m telling you,
You see soldiers come from everywhere – in one grand and glorious rush
And as he starts to call the names, there quickly comes a hush.
POOR ELMER
Elmer was a jitter-bug and liked other kinds of sports.
One day he played some ping-pong in a pair of dark blue shorts.
It was down in Mickey’s basement and her Mom had washed that day,
She had a pan of starch left she hadn’t thrown away.
SMILE AT THE SHOESTRING MAN
We were having hard times and no work could he find
And his children were crying for bread.
His heart was sad and he took what little he had
Bought shoestrings and a few spools of thread.
WHY WE STAY
Folks so often ask me, “Why do you people stay
When so many of your neighbors are moving away”?
Now the reason for the question is, the people moving in
Happen to have a different colored skin.
THE NEW BABY
When a baby comes to you,
You’ll have lots of work to do.
Every night from ten ’til two,
It’s Music, Music, Music.
THE GLORY THAT FOLLOWED THE FOG
One January morning several years ago,
I looked out of my window, a dense fog was hanging low.
The Radio told us it was the same throughout the state
That it would be noontime before it would abate.
GRADUATION
Here’s a little message
To all graduates tonight,
You are standing on the threshold
Of a new step in your life.
SPRINGTIME IN THE GARDEN
I walked alone in the garden to enjoy the beauty there,
To gaze upon God’s handiwork, to breathe the springtime air.
Around me were dainty violets and newly budding trees,
The sweet scent of the lilacs and the humming of the bees.
Somehow I did not feel alone – altho this may seem odd
But springtime in the garden brings one mighty close to God.
THE LITTLE STONE CHURCH ON THE CORNER
A little stone church on the corner, holds a big place in my heart.
It will always be, Church Home to me, though we were forced to part,
For something about this little church makes me feel at home,
Something about it draws me back no matter where I roam.
INNER BEAUTY
When I was young and fair of face,
And my curves were in the right place –
Often I would gaze with pride
On what my mirror showed outside.
FAITHFUL HANDS
Three wonderful men have been part of my life,
FATHER, HUSBAND and SON;
Two have gone to that Land beyond,
And now I have but one.
A TRIBUTE IN MEMORY OF A WONDERFUL FATHER
Not long ago I took part in a little play,
Sort of stole the show, at least that’s what they say.
It was a little comedy – written by Margaret McClure Stitt
For the ladies of the Cincinnati Literary and Music Society, it really made a hit.
A WONDERFUL MOTHER
I not only had a wonderful father,
But a wonderful mother, too –
She set a splendid example
For us to follow through.
SOWING SEEDS OF LOVE
God bless the bride and groom who do their very best
To turn a house into a home filled with love and happiness –
After awhile they decide to make their happiness complete,
They’d like to add a new joy, the patter of little feet.
DE MOLAY
Two mothers were talking about life’s trials and joys
finally the conversation drifted around to their teenage boys.
One said, “since my Jack is in high school, he’s as different as can be
The attitude he has at times will be the death of me.
MIXED EMOTIONS
At fifteen, my eldest daughter looked a great deal like her mother,
But when she’d get excited about one thing or another,
She would break out in a rash from her head to her toe –
And quick as it came, just as quick it would go.
MOTHER AND THE SICK CHILD
Keep smiling, Mother Dear –
We know it’s hard to do,
But Mother’s smiles will help so much,
To pull your darling thru.
GOD’S RICHEST BLESSING
God gave the world the sunshine,
The dewdrops and the showers.
He gave the trees that wondrous green,
Breathed perfume in the flowers.
MIGHTY OAKS FROM LITTLE ACORNS GROW
We look with pride on this group of women gathered here today,
Knowing we are all fellow workers in our P. T. A.
It really is inspiring for it most certainly would show,
How true it is that MIGHTY OAKS from Little Acorns grow.
THE DUTY OF PARENTS
Well mothers, how did you feel when this school year began
And your Bobs and Bettys ran off hand in hand,
To meet their new teachers, to learn the new rules
And join all their little friends at school.
THE PLAYGROUND ACROSS THE WAY
Where I lived there was a playground
Right across the way,
Where children of all ages
Run and romp and play.
FATE
Fate sails on the wings of the morning,
As each new day is born.
God alone knows where she is going
To deliver a rose or a thorn.
PEACE ON EARTH GOOD WILL TO MEN
If we would ask Christ, in just what way,
To honor his Birthday, he would say,
There are those in your midst, worried and blue,
They will have no Christmas, except for you.
THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS DAY
His clothes had no style
Yet when he would smile,
His clothes you never would see,
His blessings he’d share,
To lighten your care,
A friend in need he would be.
With his money he’d part,
If ‘twould gladden the heart,
Of some poor child who passed his way,
You wonder I see,
Just who this might be?
“Twas the Spirit of Christmas Day.
LIVING THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT
He had only love to give,
He gave it freely where he lived
His clothes were poor, they had no style
He hid them with a sunny smile.
GOD’S GIFT OF LOVE
It was Christmas day his heart was sad,
He grumbled over the little he had
Yet he had a body that knew no harm
And he had clothes to keep it warm.
EARLY CHRISTMAS SHOPPING
I’m one of those last minute shoppers and so I’ll always be –
When you hear my story, the reason you will see,
I’ll admit by Christmas time I’m all tuckered out,
And that is one thing my family has always fussed about.
SCARLET FEVER
Gosh! Oh gee, we are all sad and blue,
‘Cause old scarlet fever got hold of you.
He’s a mean old guy, paints you all red,
Gives you a sore throat, and a pain in the head.
A TRIBUTE TO MY MOTHER ON HER 80th BIRTHDAY
Dear Mom – 80 years behind you
We hope many more ahead,
But of the 80 years you’ve lived
There is so much to be said.
CALIFORNIA VERSUS OHIO
It goes without question, I’ve gathered some impressions,
As I traveled across this grand and glorious land –
The most amazing thing to me, is how fair God tried to be,
As He scattered blessings o’er His master plan.
GOD’S MOSAIC MASTERPIECE
Well I am back in beautiful Ohio and dear old Cincinnati.
Want to tell you about my plane ride that made me very happy –
The earth is God’s Mosaic Masterpiece, when viewed from the sky
If it happens to be a clear day, when you decide to fly.
DEAR LITTLE ONE YEAR OLD
Dear little one year old we love you so,
You came to this world just one year ago.
A wee bundle of love right from the start,
The first little glimpse captured all of our hearts.
JOY AND SADNESS
A friend had cataracts removed from her eyes,
At the age of seventy-seven
What she saw when the work was done
Made this world look like Heaven.
But when she looked into her mirror
She felt a wee bit sad,
For up to then she never knew
How many wrinkles she had.
CONTENTED RETIREMENT
Thank the Lord for the power tool, it’s a blessing beyond compare
It keeps my husband busy and keeps him out of my hair.
He makes some lovely gadgets and furniture really nice,
I’d never get it if we had to buy it, he wouldn’t pay the price.
No more fussing about telephone conversations and criticizing what I say –
The power tool is in the basement and keeps him far away –
So for contentment in retirement, take a tip from me,
Buy the old boy a power tool and much happier you’ll be.
MESSAGE FOR A SICK FRIEND
Sick in bed lady, we are thinking of you,
With heart full of sympathy and lots of love too.
We are sending this gay little wish to your door,
That you soon will feel better than ever before.
A TOAST TO MOTHERS
A toast to our Mothers, so faithful and true,
Who guide and protect us all our lives through
Our Mothers we love you and want you to know it,
Sometimes by our actions we might fail to show it.
But down deep in our hearts there’s a love that is true,
For the best of all mothers, our own Mother, that’s you.
To us you are a priceless gift, surpassing all the others,
God gave life’s richest blessing, when He gave to us our Mothers.
A TOAST TO DAUGHTERS
A toast to our daughters, from all the mothers here
May your lives grow sweeter year after year.
May you know all the joy that life can give,
And let mother be your pal as long as she may live.
THE CLOCK OF LIFE
‘Twas in the doctor’s office, this beautiful motto I read,
And if I remember right this is what it said,
“The clock of life is wound but once and only God has power,
To say just when the hands will stop, at late or early hour.
HOW IT FEELS TO BE SEVENTY-FIVE
How does it feel to be seventy? Well, I’m thankful to be here
And have good health and strength unto my seventy-fifth year.
Now how old do you feel at seventy-five? Well it is not as old as you’d think.
Folks around you seem old at seventy-five, but you feel you are still on the brink.
THE WHEEL OF LIFE
“In the beginning, God” are the first words our bibles say,
But it’s “In the beginning, Mother” in our story of today.
Mol her in the beginning and Mother at the end,
As the wheel of life turns once around, and starts out new again.
THE MESSAGE OF THE ANT
A biologist watched a tiny ant pull a straw many times its size,
And marveled at the strength and ingenuity that tiny body supplies.
Soon the ant reached a wide deep crack in the road,
And as though to ponder his problem for awhile, set down his heavy load
MY HOME TOWN
I love the town where I was born and spend my childhood days –
And when I’m away and all alone, my memory back there strays.
Although I’ve traveled far and wide, across the ocean flown,
I’m happy when I get inside the town I call my home.
A LECTURE TO MOTHERS
When your program chairman invited me to be with you tonight,
She also asked me if I thought that I’d have time to write
A little bit about those mothers who have no daughters of their own
Who borrowed a daughter for tonight and left a sad little boy at home.
MISPLACED SPORTSMANSHIP
I can’t tell this story on myself, you’d know it wasn’t true,
For I don’t drive a car, but I have a lot of friends who do.
And this little story came from one of those driving friends of mine –
I thought it was funny, so I turned it into rhyme.
A BLESSING IN DISGUISE
We left dear old Cincinnati feeling tired but very happy.
After spending a nice week end at home,
I planned to grab a little sleep on that convertible’s back seat –
The little car that Al and Doris own.
SMILES
Smiles are something we all have to give
No matter how poor we may be.
It takes but a moment to give it
But it can last an eternity.
WHY or THY WILL BE DONE
It seems that war clouds are always hovering over head, and we are asking WHY
Men in this day and age should be told to kill and die.
We covet no one eIse’s land, we expect from war no gain,
We know that heartaches and suffering are the rewards that we will claim.
THE LETTER CARRIER
The Letter Carrier leads a very thrilling life,
But it would never do for him to have a jealous wife,
For he has women running after him every single day,
Waiting on their porches for him to pass their way.
OFF TO COLLEGE
Best wishes to the boys and girls standing here tonight,
Bight on the threshold of a new step in your life;
You feel a bit like you have reached the parting of the ways,
Ah you bid farewell to your friends of your high school days.
FEBRUARY
I heard James Garfield Stewart give a lecture one day,
He held a group of women spellbound with what he had to say.
He was asked to compare the lives of Washington and Lincoln, he did it beautifully,
Just like George and Abe were old friends that he’d known personally.
SENATOR DIRKSEN
God bless you Senator Dirksen for the thrills you’ve given me.
Each time I see or hear you on Radio or T.V.
I am strolling down memory lane with my father in his prime
Because you are so very much like that dear old Dad of mine.
YOUR WEDDING DAY
Where he goes you will go after today –
Where he lives you will live, close by his side you’ll stay.
In gladness or in sadness dear, what ere your fate may be,
Together you will share it all Unto Eternity.
THE FOUR MINISTERS
Four ministers met for lunch one day
And they carried on a conversation in the usual way –
When finally the conversation drifted to temptation and sin,
And one of them mentioned he had a temptation inside of him.
A DOCTOR’S WIFE
I was as surprised as I could be,
When a doctor’s wife said to me,
It isn’t easy to be a doctor’s wife.
There are trials we go through
And things we have to do
To live a happy, healthy, normal life.
A SWIMMER’S DILEMMA
Some friends invited us to a picnic party, it was a place we’d never been –
But we were told we could have a lot of fun, we could dance or golf or swim.
So I packed a lovely picnic lunch, and we started on our way –
I had a hunch I was forgetting something, but just what it was I couldn’t say.
PHOTOGRAPHY
Today the whole world looks with pride,
On photography’s wondrous stride.
Through doors that now stand open wide,
Its uses to behold.
AS THE TWIG IS BENT SO GROWS THE TREE
As the twig is bent so grows the tree, do you believe that’s true?
I remember there was a time I used to believe it too.
Before I had children of my own how often I would say –
If that child belonged to me it would not act that way –
Indeed I’d train it different it is very plain to see,
That as the twig is bent so grows the tree.
RAINBOW STORY
Here’s a little Rainbow Story that I wrote one day
After listening to what a minister had to say.
There is a Rainbow in the sky for you,
It’s God’s way of saying, “Howdy do.”
No matter where you roam, you are never there alone,
You know he’s always there with you!
He will help you if you ask him to
He will keep the sun a-shining through,
And when you’re in need of love, just lift your eyes above
And there’s a Rainbow in the sky for you.
GIRLHOOD MEMORIES
My dad was a barber, and used barber towels galore,
My mother washed on Monday, from six A. M. to four.
Washing was work in those days in the old fashioned way,
There were no electric washers, like we have here today.
THE GOOD OLD B & O
When you are thinking of vacations, and you don’t know where to go,
Stop in and get a booklet from the good old B & O;
Whether it’s white lights of Broadway or mountains capped with snow
You’ll find just the place you’re looking for along the B & O.
MEMORIES OF THE GOOD OLD DAYS
As we grow older, it seems to me
We like to live once more in memory –
The good old days of long ago
And all the fun we used to know.
THE FLAT TIRE
A young man was forced to change a tire
In front of an Insane Asylum one day –
And he noticed one of the inmates watching him,
In a quiet and yet curious way.
PENNANT WINNERS OF 1939 – THE CINCINNATI REDS
Our thanks to Powell Crosley and General Manager, Warren Giles,
For giving us a baseball team that really is worth while.
Thanks to the sponsors, for the broadcasts each day,
And for our splendid announcers, who gave us every play.
ODE FOR BUCKY WALTERS
He is truly great, who
Upon reaching the top of the ladder
Is willing to bend over backwards
To lend a hand to those on the lower step.
(This is a little line I’ve penned for Bucky Walters when he was so kind in helping my son as a young pitcher.)
WHO’S RICHER?
Two buddies in young manhood, traveled the same road of life,
And then they came to a crossroad, as each took to him a wife.
As married couples they got together every now and then.
At the end of five years, let’s look and see what life had brought to them.
BUILDING TODAY FOR TOMORROW
The best way to build for tomorrow,
Is to do your best today,
Raising your children to be good citizens,
Honest in every way.
HELLO FOLKS, IT’S OCTOBER
In beautiful October we see the glory of Fall unfold,
Nature dons her royal robes of glorious red and gold.
The hills of Cincinnati will go on dress parade,
Where God’s Symphony of Color is so beautifully portrayed.
HELLO FOLKS IT’S DECEMBER
Christmas means so much to me I hope it does to you,
Christmas is the time of year a million dreams come true.
Dreams of little children the young folks and the old,
As the story of the “Birth of Christ” once again is told.
